Market Collective
February 3, 2012 by bweir123Market Collective is back this weekend, bringing together local artisans, musicians, artists and arts groups under the same roof. Started in 2008 by local gal pals Angel Guerra and Angela Dione, the grassroots events are held at the “Ant Hill” building at 148 10th St. N.W., a reference to the space’s former life as the Ant Hill fabric store. The market component features a diverse group of vendors offering everything from visual artworks and clothing to handcrafted jewelry. Each Market Collective event also features a lineup of musicians performing on the stage at the back of the main level, while the warren-like rooms on the upper level become makeshift galleries and spaces for interactive art installations. The signature Photobooth is on the main floor, whose backdrop this weekend will be painted by artist Jack Bride.
Saturday’s music lineup kicks off at 10 a.m. with Ian Kilburn, followed by Paul Stewart, Transit, Alex Cardinal, Calvin Locke, the Good Time Specials, the Jeff McGregor Trio and Clinton St. John. Sunday’s music lineup is all about the ladies, kicking off at 11 a.m. with Peach Tree School and continuing with Jocelyn Alice and Lisa Jacobs, Lily Hall, Megan Feniak (accompanied by Boreal Sons), Yolanda Sargeant and Carolyn “Lady C” Fraser. Upstairs installations this weekend include an in-progress hoarding board that will eventually adorn the Mustard Seed’s affordable housing tower project, screenings by the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers and artist Mandy Stobo’s Bad Portraits project. In the Hood
One of the great things about Market Collective is its location right in the heart of Kensington, a ’hood with more than its fair share of cool café hangouts and coffee spots. Just north of the Ant Hill at 314 10th St. N.W., the Roasterie is a longtime neighbourhood institution, the café of choice for an eclectic clientele of punk-rock art students and other less-buttoned-down types. As a Market Collective partner, Roasterie coffee will be available at the Ant Hill, although if you’re seeking espresso concoctions or a cold ’n’ sweet Vietnamese-style coffee drink, take your show two blocks up the road and settle in at one of the tiny tables in the Roasterie’s cosy room.
