February 1, 2012 by bweir123

The annual Calgary-Banff-Canmore all-you-can-see buffet of beautiful, bizarre and brilliant photography from across the province and around the world. Here are a mere five:

Launch of Exposure 2012

The fest kicks off at The Museum of Contemporary Art with the opening of an exhibition by two of Alberta’s most seasoned photographers: Counterpoint in Black and White: The Photography of Arthur Nishimura and Craig Richards. Expect pics of Guatemala, Uganda and a little place called Alberta. Thursday, Feb. 2, 7 p.m.

51 Buildings

He’s been everywhere, man, and shot photos of the buildings that moved and inspired him over the course of 15 years of globe-trotting. Calgary artist Robert Lemermeyer presents an exhibition of architectural prints ranging from rural African schools to Japanese housing. Wednesday, Feb. 1 to Wednesday Feb. 29 at Wine Inkorporated.

The Billboard Project

Fine art writ large thanks to Pattison Outdoor, which has donated electronic billboards to display work by participants in the 2012 Vistek Emerging Photographer Showcase. Watch for a billboard featuring a photo from last year’s winner, Jeremy Fokkens. Wednesday, Feb. 1 to Wednesday, Feb. 29, billboards across Calgary.

Diana Thorneycroft Presentation

She’ll make you squirm, but hold tight—the internationally renowned Winnipeg artist discusses her chilling take on 14 of our country’s most notorious crimes against fellow Canadians, represented  in her painstakingly crafted new series, A People’s History. Thursday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m. at the Art Gallery of Calgary.

Coal Miner Photographs, Stories and Songs

A song is worth a thousand photos (and vice versa): Photographer and storyteller Lawrence Chrismas pairs up with musician (and Calgary Herald columnist) Robert Remington to bring the mining history of the Bow Valley to life. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 7 p.m. at the Whyte Museum. $5.

Exposure runs until Wednesday, Feb. 29 at various venues. Visit exposurephotofestival.com for details.
